Always Black?

Look the PartQuestion from a reader:

Dear Mistress Blaze,
I have been looking at Dominatrix wear online, and it all seems to be black, black, black, with the occasional hints of red. Does Domme-wear *have* to be black?

I have this great tan, soft leather dryad-style corset and skirt that I am absolutely comfortable in that I would much prefer. It would not be a question for me if I had an established partner, but I am in the position of meeting and greeting. Even with Domme confidence, am I more likely to be dismissed at first glance/mistaken for a sub if I go with my less conventional but more comfortable wear?

This is the first time I have deliberately sought out like-minded groups of people with Dom/sub interests so I have no idea how important/unimportant a certain degree of conformity is.

My Dear Mistress DT,

The short answer to this question is of course -- NO!

You are in charge. Wear whatever you want! Wear what makes you feel sexy, powerful, and in control. Black is the stereotypical color, simply because it's a common color for leather, but if you are a Domme who prefers lace, then that's entirely up to you.

Your darling sub will have some expectation of course, and if you feel like rewarding him for good behavior, then you might treat him to a preference of his color choice, but again, you are in charge.

However, when meeting with groups of people and you wish to establish yourself, make sure that whatever color you choose, your overall look reeks of power and control. Do NOT wear a collar (those are for subs), or wrist straps or any other type of item that might be confused as a restraint (again, those are for subs!). DO wear kick ass shoes, and carry an instrument -- such as a whip, crop, paddle, or even a leash or a collar rolled up and tied to your waist ready to use as soon as you need it. Wear bold makeup, especially lipstick, and above all wear an aire of confidence and control.

As for "conforming", don't even go there. I'd say there is very little about domination/submission that has to do with conformity. Unless you are talking about conforming his ass to your paddle, that is....

Indulge, Enjoy, Escape....

I agree it is entirely up to YOU!! More importantly you make your sub wear red/ pink etc my own sub loves ALL that his dom gives him to wear and as such his obedience is improved in his red nursemaids outfit, red bra and red stockings. I think that black is true noir and power colour of dommes but it can definitely be spiced up with red as I often do myself...my sub is entirely at ease and is more receptive to my whip and cane in his dom chosen wear. Why not have fun and buy a purple rabbit or dildo ,my sub and I are having tremdous fun with these toys which moves us away from black.....Your colours which make you feel strongest, sexiest and powerful should be your choice. Dress your sub as you mean to take charge and control him and he will obey and love his dom more!!

Of course my Dom looks incredibly powerful and sexy in black, especially when she wears her stilletto platforms. However, as a sub, I know that my dom will also be served fully if she wears red or as a very special treat for her sub, leopard skin print clothes and lingerie. My dom certainly knows how to exude power and authority whatever she is wearing (on top and underneath). A very satisfied sub!
